Social networking sites, such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, are very popular with children. These sites allow children to be incredibly creative online, keep in touch with their friends and express themselves using a whole range of different media and applications such as video, photos, music, and chat.
However, it’s important to recognise that while these are fun and offer great possibilities for children, there are potential risks including cyberbullying, contact by adults with a sexual interest in children and the misuse of personal information.
Sue Bullock had attended a course and gave the presentation to parents at the parents forum. All parents realised that at the moment their children are probably too young to be accessing these sites, but they needed to be aware of it in the future.
The general feeling was that school should not make a big issue of this, but should include some of it in PHSE lessons.
The parents who attended the meeting agreed to talk to other parents about the dangers.
